WHY BUY A STEPPER?
|
- Stair stepping has been used by both amateur and professional athletes for years. It is a highly efficient method for building aerobic conditioning and leg strength.
- Stepping on a machine is an excellent lower-impact workout.
- Stair steppers, like bikes, have a smaller "footprint" than treadmills. They can fit in a smaller space than other pieces of fitness equipment.
- Stair stepping is a weight bearing exercise which raises the heart rate faster. This means you have the ability to have a more intense workout in a shorter period of time.
- Note: Steppers are not recommended to people with lower back problems. The stepping motion may aggravate a chronic condition. A bike, recumbent bike or treadmill may be more ideal.

SHOPPING FOR A STEPPER
|
When it comes to climbers, there are two basic types of stepping motions to choose from: dependent and independent. On a dependent motion climber, the steps themselves are linked so that when the user pushes down on one step, the other step goes up. Independent motion climbers have steps which are not linked together, and move independently of each other. This eliminates the user’s ability cheat on his or her workout by shifting weight from side to side to keep the pedals moving (which is possible on a dependent motion climber).

HOW DO CYLINDER-DRIVEN CLIMBERS WORK?
|
The simplest steppers are typically built with shock-like cylinders that are operated manually. These cylinders use air or hydraulic fluid to provide resistance. Usually you can change the resistance settings on the cylinder by turning a knob. If you want an independent motion climber that is cylinder driven, be sure and get one with heavy duty cylinders. Since they are not tied together and are forced to bear the entire load of the user, they need to have a greater load capacity. Basically, the greater the diameter of the cylinder, the greater the load capacity. Cylinder driven climbers generally only display your workout time, total number of steps, approximate distance climbed, and sometimes calories burned.
