SHOPPING FOR FREE WEIGHT EQUIPMENT
|
Free weight equipment is a great way to achieve the results of strength training. Strength training helps in burning fat, toning muscles, building joint strength, and warding off osteoporosis. Essentially, all you need are some barbells and dumbbells to get started. You’ll need to add at least a good weight bench and squat rack to allow you to work every muscle group completely. Benefits of using free weights include: low cost, larger variety and freedom of movements, as well as limited space requirements.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN WEIGHTS AND DUMBBELLS
- A smooth surface with no sharp edges.
- Comfortable grip that’s not too narrow or wide.
- Well balanced in your hand.
- Fits onto the bar selected (olympic or standard)
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN FREE WEIGHT EQUIPMENT
- Make sure it is very stable (not wobbly).
- Operates smoothly.
- Has clear operating instructions.
- Is biomechanically correct. (Back support, etc.)
- Fits (and can operate) in the room you intend to put it.
WHAT KIND OF WARRENTY DOES IT HAVE?
The longer the warranty, the greater the confidence that the manufacturer has in its product. At Busy Body, we choose products from manufacturers that build quality products and back them with substantial warranties.
IS IT BUILT WELL?
The unit should be built to last. The frame should be commercial grade tubing. The unit should be welded together (rather than bolted) wherever possible. Check the welds and see that they are clean, neat and strong. Also, shake the unit. Does it jiggle or wobble or sway in an unstable manner? If so, you may not have complete confidence in it.
ARE THE SEATS AND PADS COMFORTABLE AND EASY TO ADJUST?
Make sure the padding on seats and armrests is adequate; foam that’s too thin will not be comfortable. You should not be able to feel the board underneath. And make sure the padding is well-secured; watch out for cheap stapling or stitching.
ARE YOU COMFORTABLE IN EACH WORKOUT POSITION?
Try it before you buy it. Give it a good workout to get a feel for the pads, the mechanics and the way it fits your body. Try all the exercises you plan on using it for. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
