BOWFLEX TREADCLIMBER® / NAUTILUS MOBIA
** This is information on the Bowflex Treadclimber/ Nautilus Mobia - We are not currently stocking this product **

The Bowflex TreadClimber and Nautilus Mobia are the same product from the same company with different packaging. In the section below, when referring to the Treadclimber, we are also referring to the Nautilus Mobia.

We have sold and serviced the Bowflex Treadclimber for many years. We have very mixed feelings about this product. If we weren't a small shop, took every sale with personal attention, and never had to see you again, the Treadclimber would be a pretty easy sale. However, we are in this for the long haul, so we state the facts, make suggestions, and let our customers decide what equipment would best fit their needs.

Through the power of television commercials, the treadclimber creates a lot of curiosity. Bowflex will suggest that you can get in shape faster and safer with the Bowflex than anything else out there. Lets clarify some facts:

Bowflex states "Twice the workout in half the time" or "Reduce your workout time." The truth is that Bowflex has fine print of the bottom of the television screen that states they compare their results to a treadmill at 0% incline. The Bowflex treadclimber is at a fixed incline. We feel that this statement is very misleading. If you kick up the elevation on a treadmill, the calorie expenditure is the same. It would be like me telling you that I can get to Buffalo in half the time, but not telling you that I'm going go 120mph to get there.

Bowflex states that the Treadclimber is a "Low impact" workout. Typically with this statement they are showing a person "running" on a treadmill with animations to indicate there is pain in their knees, hip, and back. Depending on which Treadclimber model you look at, the truth is that the top speed on their machines range from 3.8 mph to 4.5 mph. We feel that this statement is misleading because you can't run on a treadclimber and yet they show a person running on a treadmill. Again, kick up the incline on a treadmill, reduce the speed, and the treadmill is a low impact workout. On top of all this, every treadmill today offers a shock absorption system to minimize impact and the Treadclimber has no such system built within their deck.

Quoting from their webpage "Why buy a machine that only offers you 1 workout - when you can buy a Bowflex® TreadClimber® machine and get 3 workouts in 1!" Although this is an appealing statement, this is perhaps the biggest caution of this machine. The Treadclimber requires balance, timing, and coordination. When you use this machine, you have to time each step, make sure you are hitting the "treadle" in the same spot each time, and apply equal amount of force with each foot strike each time you step down. Most people concluded that tried it in our store that it required more brain power to use than physical power. Perhaps the Treadclimber is the modern day Nordic Track skier. The Nordic Track skier was a good machine, but it's main flaw was that it required a lot of mental power to operate. Today, most people realize they want mindless natural exercise. They don't want to think about what their doing which in turn makes the time go more quickly and perhaps is more natural to the body. To defend the conventional treadmill again, a treadmill offers elevation. When you walk flat or change the incline from one degree to another, your stimulating different muscles at every point. Variation, (or today's hot word "muscle confusion") is more easily achieved through a treadmill rather than a Treadclimber. A Treadclimber may claim 3 machines in 1, but with a typical 15 degrees of incline on a treadmill, a treadmill could claim 15 machines in 1.

Bowflex as a brand is a love/ hate relationship. They inspire many people to move through the power of their advertising. However, they are typically promoting "overnight" instant results where we are try to encourage exercise as a lifestyle. It has been proven many times that consistent exercise is good for the body and mind. Our encouragement is that you should look at exercise as journey and not as a set destination that will end in 6 weeks. Take your time when shopping for a piece of exercise equipment. Ideally you want to try it before you buy it. After cutting through all the marketing hype and sales pitch lines, the equipment needs to fit and feel right to each individual user. With any piece of exercise equipment, you'll get out of it what you put into it.

With all said, the Treadclimber use to be sold in numerous specialty and big box stores throughout the country. Today, the Treadclimber is not sold in any stores and only sold direct through their website or their 800#. This action suggests to me that Bowflex realized if a potential customer had the chance to try it before they buy it, they were usually disappointed after doing so. If their product was next to other options, a lot of people choose the other option.

TreadClimber® machine burns up to 2 TIMES more calories than a treadmill - at the same speed!‡

Studies were conducted at the prestigious Human Performance Laboratory at New York's Adelphi University. The results were dramatic! In 22 separate trials, the TreadClimber® machine burned up to 2 times more calories in 30 minutes than a treadmill at the same speed!‡

The TreadClimber® machine helps you work smarter - not harder!

What makes this dramatic difference?

It's the TreadClimber® machine's unique "Dual-Treadles." They're engineered to work more of your large muscle groups at the same time to really fuel your calorie burning!

TreadClimber® machine offers a lower impact workout.

According to Dr. Gloria Beim, a Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, the TreadClimber® machine provides little to no impact on knee and ankle joints because of the fluid motion of the "Dual-Treadles". She says,

"The best machine I've found so far to do low-impact exercise without stressing your joints is the TreadClimber®."

"With the TreadClimber® machine, the axial compression to your joints is very low. It's more of a gliding, smooth motion to your joints, and you don't feel the impact that you would on a treadmill."

Ellipticals don't follow your natural range of motion

Unlike elliptical trainers that force you to walk in a pre-set pattern, the TreadClimber® "Dual-Treadles" adapt to your natural walking style. Your knees and feet have a greater range of motion to make walking easier.

In Summary: With a TreadClimber® machine, you get a superior cardio workout in the shortest amount of time, with a lot less impact to your joints - all in the privacy of your own home.
